2013_09_24 Tuesday: Yerevan

Today was a laid back day in town. With both being slightly under the weather, we're taking it easy. Left hotel around 13:00 and checked out a few sites in town:

1. Cascade complex - a nice long staircase with various statues and fountains and good view

2. Opera House - nice building

3. St. Grigor Cathedral - impressive building in size, but very unimpressive on the inside relative to other European cathedrals. There has just been a wedding when we visited. At some point folks from the audience shook hands and hugged the newly weds (there were just a few people). I considered doing the same - thus officially become a wedding crasher…

4. History Museum of Armenian History - got there after it closed. Could have been interesting I suppose. Located in the Republic Square (main square).

Republic Square (part of it)

After an evening rest, we headed out at night to see the special fountain in the Republic Square. It's a combination of water, light, and music.

Human Burger (and fries)

After that we checked out an ice-cream place for the second time. It's worth mentioning because of the divine hazelnut flavor they had. So, if anyone stops by Yerevan, I all heartedly recommend going to the Segafredo Cafe on  Amiryan St. building 3/37, and checking out the Sorriso Gelato, hazelnut flavor. Sharon claims that the Tiramisou flavor is superior. However, as an expert in all things being sweet, I can unequivocally state that she has no idea what she's talking about.

Yummy!

Finally, at the hotel I was rather surprised to learn that only a single key card is given per room. We appear to have misplaced ours, and the receptionist refused to provide us with a new one, saying we needed to find our key. How bizarre…

Yerevan Conclusion: The city is really nice and very lively. Definitely a fun place, though lacking the architecture of the good old European cities. Further, while the country is quite poor ($3000 GDP per capita - one tenth of the Israeli figure), restaurants and supermarkets are quite expensive (maybe 70% of Israeli prices?).
