2013_09_20 Friday: Borjomi - Gori

Today was a rather laid back day. It started with a fine breakfast for four at 8:30 (6-egg omelet curtesy of Sharon). Neta and Alon took off to Gori and then Tbilisi. We still had a thing to do in Borjomi area. Specifically, a couple of hours of walking in the national park around here. It was quite nice, partially shaded walk along a stream.

My new office?

After lunch (at Vatkashsurat restaurant), a little before 16:00, we left to Gori. I expected to charge my phone using the car charger. But someone, her name I dare not mention, exhibited remarkable technical ability (as is to be expected from a Technion graduate) and inserted the car charger in the lighter slot in reverse...

Gori is Stalin's (RIP) birth town. It has a museum describing his life, which was created by the Soviets and hasn't been altered since 1979. Consequently, everything is in Georgian and Russian, with no English. Further, this museum does not describe all the bad shit the guy had done. Next to the museum there's the train wagon he used to ride when traveling places. Lastly, the museum is situated next to his birth house, which is where he lived until he was four years old. The place is tiny, and in this tiny house, the Jugashvilis lived in one room that had no bath or toilet (the outside was used for that). Anyway, we had a quick guided tour with an annoying Georgian guide who spoke too quickly and too unclearly to fully understand what she was saying.

We were done by 18:00. After hanging out at the adjacent park-like avenue, we headed to Svetlana's guesthouse. Apparently she's quite famous and used to be a department head in some hospital. Now she hosts backpackers.. She has antique furniture in a house that has clearly seen some good days. Of course, in the usual Georgian way, she has her own grapes hanging over her yard.
