2013_09_22 Sunday: Yerevan

A word about the hotel where we stay. It's called Hrazdan, and is quite nice, at $100 a night roughly. It's located about 2km or so from Republic square, which can be considered the most central point. Breakfast hall is quite nice and on first sight it seemed like it would be a great breakfast as can be seen from the photo below. Yet, the photo is deceptively disappointing.

We just did a couple of things today:

1. Went to the Armenian Genocide Museum. It's quite interesting, yet rather small, which is probably understandable in light of the much fewer documentation relative to the Holocaust. I've been asked by a couple of local students to be video taped about it and share my opinion. I gave my two cents.

There was a tour with a guide at the museum, which I felt free to join, not realizing it was private. Of course I could not help myself and asked the guide some questions. Apparently, a couple of guys in the tour were a bit shocked as I later found out from Sharon. Oh well, at least I've learned a couple of things...

2. We went to the Vernisage market. Real famous. Real crap. Basically it's a market full of "Shmontzes"  (Yiddish term meaning useless crap). The folks are really into Backgammon.

Shmontzes

After this we booked a tour for tomorrow that goes south east and gets close to Mt. Ararat and a couple of monasteries. It gets real close to the Turkish border and the Azeri border of the disputed area of Nakhijevan (south of Armenia).
